Recreational Activities

Each group has a number of recreational options and choices. Most 10-Day Experience groups will travel to Seward for their last three days. At Seward, there are a variety of experiences from no cost to fairly expensive. Likewise, while staying at Eaglecrest Campus, there are many options each evening to consider. In addition to options listed below, your group can experience a number of hiking options, from fairly easy to challenging and difficult. Sight-seeing is always available (somewhat depending on weather). Each group leader will need to work with your EAM representative to build a recreation package that works for your group (many of these options will be further explained at the pre-trip planning visit).

EAM will schedule and coordinate all your recreation choices for 10-Day Experiences, or your group can handle this on their own. You will save a slight amount per person should you choose to schedule on your own. Keep in mind that all payments, changes, refunds, etc., are handled directly between your group and the agency you work with. If you choose to have EAM schedule your recreation, you will need to complete the Recreation Activities Form below and submit with payment by May 1. Your EAM representative will discuss this further at the pre-trip visit.

The following Local Recreational Activities are included with both the 7-Day and the 10-Day Experience at no additional fee (weather permitting).

Matanuska Glacier Exploration

Alaska is home to over 100,000 glaciers. Within close proximity of Camp Matauska (in Sutton) is the 27 mile long Matanuka Glacier. As one optional group activity, you may explore this Glacier up close and personal. An access road has been created and maintained to allow vehicles easy accessibility.

Hiking

The following Local Recreational Activities are Optional with both the 7-Day and the 10-Day Experience at an additional fee (weather permitting).

Bush Plane Ride

One of the best opportunities in Alaska is to witness God's majestic creation from the air. Within a short distance of our camp, licensed and experienced pilots are available to provide you an incredible breathe-taking view. In addition to the unbelievable scenery, groups often see animals such as mountain sheep, moose and bear. Flights are subject to weather conditions. If we not able to work in a time because of weather, your payment will be reimbursed. Not all group members need to participate. Most planes will seat three plus the pilot.

Cost: $50 per person

White Water Rafting

Rafting may be scheduled on the Matanuska River during your stay at Camp Eaglecrest. Rafting companies provide all the gear (including dry suits) and an experienced guide. More information can be found on the companies' websites:

  • Nova River Runners
  • Madwater Rafting

The following Seward Recreational Activities are Optional with the 10-Day Experience at an additional fee (weather permitting).

Wildlife Marine Cruise

Groups that travel to Seward their last three days will have opportunity to enjoy some of Alaska's finest recreational options. One such option is a three hour wildlife marine cruise on the Resurrection Bay. During the cruise, you'll likely see many types of marine animals, including seals, whales and puffins, in addition to beautiful scenery. The price includes a prime rib and salmon dinner, as well as a dessert bar. For more information, log onto majormarine.com.

Cost: $95 per person

Fishing

A variety of fishing options are available. For those that want a fishing experience to remember for a lifetime, a fishing charter out of Seward is the way to go. Although a little pricey, most groups catch fish and sometimes limit out. With available fish processing plants in Seward and Anchorage, participants can get their fish cleaned, vacuum packed and frozen to ship home (additional cost). If some in your group would like a guided fishing experience, contact your EAM representative for complete details on various options.

Cost: $160-$250 per person

White Water Rafting

Rafting may be scheduled on Six Mile Creek.  Rafting companies provide all the gear (including dry suits) and an experienced guide.  For additional details, see the Nova River Runners website.
